Carriage House definitely doesn't need us boosting it. They can draw a crowd all on their own merits. The strange thing is, those merits, while noticeable, don't seem as overwhelming as their reputation suggests.
A very handsome dining room with lots of capacity and incredibly friendly wait staff and proprietor make this place what it is. They have daily specials and a selection of sides, though they have run out of multiple popular items on a busy day, and their website's PDF menu is not representative of the actual menu in the restaurant. The beef tips are great. The burgers are very tasty and the steak fries are fried very well. They put out a relish tray with cheese and crackers and pickled things to keep you occupied while you wait for the meal. Your standard Southern Greek diner. Carriage House really packs them in. A 30-minute wait is not out of the question even if you arrive fairly early on a Friday or Saturday afternoon for dinner, and yet their food selection is not much different than any other typical Greek Southern diner. Their vegetable selection is not stellar and their portions not incredibly generous, but they command a devout enough following that their prices verge a dollar or three higher than other diners of the same type for the exact same dish. This is a venue to take your mother, as it will provide nonthreatening meals with which she's familiar, whilst the higher prices keep the clientèle well-dressed and deferential. But if you're looking for generous portions and low prices, you might want to look elsewhere in our Diners area here at the Twin City Sentinel.
