The Cloverdale Kitchen is a great place for breakfast. In fact, it has quite possibly the best pancakes in the world. They are piping hot when they arrive (provided you ordered the simple Breakfast Special, with two pancakes, an egg and bacon or sausage), and they serve them with real butter, which I'm sure goes a long way in rendering my opinion of them.
Other breakfast selections are just as enticing: great link sausage, eggs served hot to order, and tasty coffee kept hot by a fairly consistently good wait staff. Service can be sluggish during peak weekday lunch time, and the place is incredibly sensitive to a missing server or cook, it seems. The cashiers could be a bit friendlier, but all in all we come back to this place at least monthly.Open since 1968, the Cloverdale Kitchen still has a significant portion of its original decor -- which we see as a huge bonus -- and there is a small counter seating area. There are photos of old Twin City diners and other buildings scattered around the rear dining area. This long-running Twin City favorite is the last remaining original tenant of a forty-year-old shopping center which once housed a Zayre department store (where Harris-Teeter is now located), a Kroger supermarket, and the recently-shuttered Mel Brooks Fashions. The very compact urban center remains surprisingly busy to this day, and it's unlikely that you will be able to park adjacent to the front door of the place. The extra steps will help your digestion, though.
Breakfast is the specialty here, to be sure, but lunches and dinners, which range from sandwiches to meat and vegetable plates to standard Greek diner fare, are fine too, if not particularly memorable. The Cloverdale Kitchen has been a smoke-free establishment since 2006.
